Everybody is interested in the Olympic Games today. Millions of people watch them on the TV. All of us know the best sportsmen of the Olympic Games.
More than 2,500 years ago in Greece people came together at a place called Olympia. They watched and took part in sports games there. At the beginning there was only one race. Soon other contests took place – wrestling and boxing matches, jumping javelin and discus throwing. The Games was seven days long. The Olympic Games were very popular in Greece. Wars and fighting stopped for the opening of the contests. The winners were great heroes, everybody honoured them.
In 394 the Olympic Games in Greece ended. The first modern Games began at Athens, Greece, on April 5, 1896. Only 12 countries took part.
Today the Olympic Games take place every four years. Teams of sportsmen from more than a hundred countries march at the opening festival.…
