2. Geothermal energy in Latvia
Main data about geothermal potential in Latvia is obtained during scientific researching performing deep boring (more than 100 places). In process of boring, two places with anomalies had been discovered, first is located in the central part of Latvia between Jūrmala and Eleja, the second is located in the coastal part of the Baltic Sea. No projects have been developed for these areas, though. However, there are not significant statistical data about geothermal energy usage in households. Nevertheless, geothermal energy is becoming more and more popular in Latvia, as it’s easy accessible, renewable and clean, and due to quite high tariffs for heat energy and electricity [5,6,7].
It’s estimated that total potential for Latvian geothermal energy is around 175 MW/h per year [5].
In Latvia is voluntary independent professional society – Latvian National Geothermal Association, which join private individuals and companies on a basis of community objectives to promote the geothermal energy development. The aim of LNGA is to facilitate Latvian research and development of geothermal resources, professional growth of engaged specialists, promotion and prestige ensuring for geothermal activities, as well as learning the best available technologies. [7].
Geothermal energy in Latvia is used mainly in heating and district heating, cogeneration, balneology, mineral extraction, agriculture and fish farms [7].
