The topic “Death penalty is a deterrent to crime” has not been chosen without a particular reason. The author of the essay is an advocate of strong measures and severe sentences. This work aims at proving that the death penalty is a necessary tool to deter potential criminals.
There are some crimes that demand a sentence of death. It is the only appropriate punishment for a cruel and heinous crime. Let me start from a glimpse to history. In 19th century, when India was occupied by the British, there was a gang of murdering thieves. Their victims mostly were wealthy travellers. Members of the gang could be disguised as poor beggars or religious mendicants. Sometimes they wore a garb of rich merchants to be able to get closer to their future victims. The killers had a principle: never to spill blood. They always strangled their victims and thus, got a name for their gang – the thuggees. Each member of the gang was required to kill at least once a year in order to maintain membership in the cult. They killed in the name of religion, the goddess of destruction known as Kali. …
