The author of the short story, Herbert Ernest Bates (1905-1974), is one of the best-known English writers. He has written several novels but his best works are his short stories. In his works, Bates concentrates mainly on details and tiny hints, believing that an extensive description is not needed if details presented are revealing enough.
The theme of the story is that every tiny detail in the world has a meaning, every little thing or creature has a heart. As concerns the plot of the short story, it starts with an exposition and we are introduced to a young lady, Mrs Shuttleworth and her daily routine.…
