Australia is the sixth largest country in the world. It's about the same size as the 48 mainland states of the USA and 50 per cent larger than Europe, but has the lowest population density in the world - only two people per square kilometre.

Geography
Australia, the world’s smallest continent but largest island, covers an area of 7,682,300 square kilometers and is about the same size as the 48 mainland states of the USA, and 50 per cent larger than mainland Europe. With the lowest population density in the world (only two people per square kilometre), there is plenty of room to move!
From the east coast, a narrow fertile strip extends west toward the Great Dividing Range. This range runs nearly the length of the continent and has a great influence on coastal weather conditions.
West of this range the land becomes flat and forms desert. The ‘centre’ is harsh and often inhospitable but full of extraordinary beauty, from Uluru (Ayers Rock) to the starkly beautiful MacDonnell Ranges.
