Frank O’Connor, born Michael Francis O’Connor O’Donovan, was an Irish writer, who lived in the first half of 20th century. He created more than 150 literary works, such as novellas, plays, poems, but he is best known for his short stories and memoirs. O’Connor’s early life was marked by father’s alcoholism and ill-treatment of his mother, Minnie O’Connor. She was the supplier of the family’s income and Frank’s childhood was shaped by her. In the short story ’My Oedipus Complex, written by Frank O’Connor, are reflected the fact of great importance and influence of his mother, his feelings to her. The Oedipus complex is named after the Greek mythical character Oedipus, who unknowingly kills his father, Laius, and marries his mother, Jocasta. According to the theory of Sigmund Freud, the complex appears between the ages of three and five. The story may be considered to be autobiographical.
The story ‘My Oedipus Complex’ is a fist-person narration. The narrator is autodiegetic and, consequently, it is the protagonist. It means that the author disappears in the main character, who tells the story in the first person. The most interesting is that the perception of situations and occurring actions are described from the point of view of a young boy, but the way how they are described makes impression, that the story is told by a grown up person.…
