Social control vs. the individual
In dystopian ficton the main focus is on the opposition between social control and an individual. Institution has the power over the human individuality. Such institutions as church, school and police take control over the thoughts, dreams and behaviour of people, thus limiting any and all individual expression and opportunity to explore alternative lifestyles (Booker & Thomas, 2009). The institutions represent the state or various political and economical regimes that are being criticized by the authors of such dystopian novels as We by Yevgeny Zamyatin (1924),Brave New World by Aldous Huxley (1932) and, of course, Nineteen Eighty-Four by George Orwell (1949). These authors bring attention to the fact that any political and economical regime is in danger of developing into a totalitarian system with the sole goal of self-preservation rather than benefiting their citizens (ibid.).
