The Republic of South Africa is located in the south of the African continent. It is bordered by the Atlantic Ocean on the west and by the Indian Ocean on the south and east. Its neighbours are Namibia in the northwest, Zimbabwe and Botswana in the north, and Mozambique and Swaziland in the northeast. The kingdom of Lesotho forms an enclave within the southeast part of South Africa.
The area of the country is 1 219 090 km2 and the population in the 2010 was 49 991 000 people.
South Africa has three capital cities: Cape Town, the largest of the three, is the legislative capital; Pretoria is the administrative capital; and Bloemfontein is the judicial capital.
South Africa is known for diversity in cultures and languages. Eleven official languages are recognised in the constitution. The most popular are Afrikaans language and English. South Africa is ethnically diverse. About 79.5% of the South African population is of black African ancestry, divided among a variety of ethnic groups such as Zulu, Xhosa, Ndebele and other.
