Conclusion
The European Union funding payments, particularly direct payments, are very important for farmers in Latvia. Indeed in 2014, about 61 653 farm businesses received 143 million in direct payments. Furthermore, more than a half of them received a payment above 5000 euro. After all, this is not the only benefit of Common Agricultural Policy. Through this policy, the EU provides different types of quality measures, where more than 1300 protected food names are classified as Protected Designation of Origin, a Traditional Speciality Guaranteed or a Protected Geographical Indication, therefore helping producers increase the quality of products to maintain competitiveness in the market, development and jobs. Currently, Latvia has 6 food products registered.
