The short story “Odour of Chrysanthemums” implies dark and depressing notions. It reflects the human’s emotions dealing with death. The main heroine Elisabeth Bates leads an ordinary life in a small town near the mines. She seems to be carried away with her daily routine, because nothing extraordinary happens in the place she lives until the tragedy when she looses her husband, what is a big turning point in her life.
The action of the story takes place in the evening and later at the following night, what makes the mood of the story rather gloomy. It creates a feeling that Elisabeth Bates has lived in the dark all her life. She does not have any joy; even her children do not seem to make her life brighter and happier. Her life is monotonous, everyday passes with no changes. …
