There are a lot of people in Riga and Latvia. The Latvian population is really a multicultural one. More than 100 nationalities and ethnic groups are represented, making up 35 percent of the total population, but many of these people do not speak Latvian. We must live in our country with the Russians, the Lithuanians, the Estonians, the Poles, the English, the Germans and other neighbours. If you want to understand them, you have to learn a lot of different languages. I think that it is really interesting to live in such a multicultural society as here, in Latvia, because in our lives we must “touch” different manners and traditions. As an example I will mention eating traditions: the Latvians, the Germans and the English are quiet when they are eating, but the Russians and other nationalities from the former are making some loud noise during the meals. …
