The specific nature of Latgalian folklore is influenced by several factors. The first is the tradition of writing what explains the artistic nature of the nation. The second is a political and economical isolation from other regions of Latvia from 1629 to 1919. The third is a special Latgalian ethnic mentality. The collection of folklore in Latgale was delayed. It started by the Enlightenment diffusion in Europe in the 18th century. Folklore collection in Latgale can be identified in several stages: early information about Latgalian folklore (before the 19th century); pre-nationalistic stage (1840s – 1880s); hand-written literature; nationalistic stage of folklore collection (1880s to present).
