He was born in Daugavpils, Latvia on September 25, 1903. When he was just ten years old his family immigrated to United States and settling in Portland, Oregon in 1913. In 1921 Rothko entered Yale University where he studied French, English, history, mathematics, physics, biology, and economics. His initial intention was to become an engineer or an attorney, but after two years at Yale he moved to New York City and studied briefly at the Art Students League with Max Weber, who introduced him to Cubism and the work of Paul Cezanne.
On February 25, 1970, Mark Rothko committed suicide, ending a long, productive career that produced some of the most stunning, engaging and innovative images of the modern era.
