Relations between Latvia and Germany are developing with the common aim of a unified and free Europe and stable, economically developed Baltic Sea Region. Germany supports Latvia's membership of NATO and the European Union. Interstate relations are characterised by an active exchange of visits, dynamic economic relations, regular parliamentary contacts, direct cooperation between Latvia and German Federal States and wide-ranging contacts between a range of institutions. Additionally, 22 towns, regions and villages in Germany have established ties with Latvia.
History of Diplomatic Relations
Diplomatic relations between Latvia and Germany were established in February 1921 when Germany recognised the existence of the State of Latvia de iure. On 28 August 1991 the two countries renewed relations interrupted for half a century. The current Ambassador of Germany to Latvia is H.E. Eckart Herold; the Ambassador of Latvia to Germany is H.E. Martins Virsis. …
