The Hubble Space Telescope

Ever since Galileo used his homemade telescope to make the first scientific observations of astronomical objects, scientists have used telescopes to explore the universe beyond the naked eye; the Hubble Space Telescope is a magnificent example of a modern day telescope capable of transmitting varied and extensive data of the far corners of the universe. The Hubble Space Telescope was named after an American astronomer, Edwin P. Hubble. The United States Congress authorized the construction of the telescope in 1977. The telescope was then built under the supervision of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA). It was launched on April 24, 1990 and placed into orbit by the crew of the space shuttle Discovery. The telescope's first image was transmitted on May 20, 1990. It was of the star cluster NGC 3532.
