Abstract
The aim of this paper is to asses the validity of the empowerment thesis; the belief that new forms of work organisation are overturning traditional managerial structures and returning control of employees. Specifically, the essay seeks to explore the role of 'empowering forms of work organisation (in this case using Fab Sweets as the case study) and of occupational hierarchies, respectively, in influencing levels of employee autonomy.
We live in an organizational word. Organizations of one form or another are a
necessary part of our society and serves many important needs.
An organisation can be described as collection of people working together for a common goal or the process identifying and grouping the work to be performed, defining and delegating responsibility and authority and establishing relationship for the purpose of enabling people to work effectively together in accomplishing objectives (Mullins, L. (1996) Management and Organisational behaviour). Over the years, there have been many diverse management theories aimed at solving organisational problems. More emphasis will be laid on Empowerment and how empowerment can be used to solve problems within an establishment with Fab Sweet as a case study.
