It was a cold autumn afternoon and I had just arrived at home when suddenly my partner detective Steve Wilson rang me to say there had been a death in Birmingham’s business centre. Accidental, according to the colleagues. The body was found in the elevator.
There was a snowfall outside when I left for the building. The deceased was Jane Hutch, a 22-year-old designer who worked there. The body was lying in the middle of the elevator. Nearby, there was a very expensive-looking man’s golden ring, a lot of papers all around which were divorce documents and digital camera with images which showed two lovers.
