CONCLUSION
Having done the research on “the Function of Smell in O. Wilde’s Novel the Picture of Dorian Gray” firstly, it is worth to mention that it is thanks to Oscar Wilde Aesthetic movement lives. Aesthetics is closely connected to feelings and emotions, due to this fact it is possible to take pleasure just from reading literature and enjoying its beauty, which is invisible in reality.
As it turned out in the process of research - any smell whether it is pleasant or disgusting could be seen as beautiful because there are no absolute aesthetic values, all depends on the person and his experience.
Smell is an important sense that living beings possess. Its functions have not changed through time and space. The functions of the smell remain the same regardless whether these are contemporary times, the past of the humanity, like Victorian Period, or it is a fictional work of book.
Therefore, the functions of smell in the novel “the Picture of Dorian Gray” are similar to the ones the smell has in real life. The smell functions as healer, relief-giver, truth-teller, torturer, reminder of the forgotten memories. It initiates to secrets and mysteries, creates atmosphere of safety, affects senses and mood. The world of people is a sensory world. Sounds, colours, smells, texture of things and objects define and make it as we see or want to see it, as we feel it. The use of smell in this literary work creates a specific atmosphere, which O. Wilde wishes to be perceived by the reader. This novel from the first line to the last is permeated with elegance. Carefully chosen words help to catch the idea of its creator and understand his behaviour and feelings to something.…
