State-owned land protection from harmful human activities is known for centuries, but the idea of specific conservation and protected areas for environmental education emerged in the 19th century. In 1872. in U.S. was established Yellowstone National Park, which is considered the world's first modern national park. The world's largest national park is the North-East Greenland National Park (National Park, 2010).
The National Park is a protected, wide area characterized by outstanding, nationally significant natural features, the fact that the area is free from any human activities, ancient landscapes and outstanding cultural landscapes, diversity of habitats, cultural and historical wealth and cultural specificities.

Latvian national parks area, according to goals of protection and use of it, divide in two functional zones (Fpr Special Protection..., 1993). National parks are areas where all natural resources are completely excluded from economic and other activities. The rest of the national park area is restricted to such economic activity, that doesn’t change the historic structure of this particular landscape.
National park's main task is environmental protection, heritage conservation, research, organization of education and recreation (the latter is allowed only for activities that promotes environmental protection and cultural activities) (Par īpaši aizsargājamām..., 1993).…
