The New Age movement has, essentially, two meanings. There is the faddish element that is given prominence by the media such as phenomena, personalities like Shirley MacLaine, and events. The other, broader meaning is a more serious adherence to the occult-metaphysical tradition and an attempt to transform society. (Kyle 4) Many authorities state that the New Age is a passing fad that was best suited for the social and economic climate of the 1980's. The movement has received less media attention in the recent decade and some observers see this as a sign that the movement is declining. The New Age movement represents an updating of the long-standing occult and metaphysical tradition in American life, so in that respect it has a good chance of survival. On the other hand, as a distinct movement, it may be on the decline due to its lack of central organization. Also, a number of New Age entrepreneurs such as health food stores, publishers, and alternative health practitioners are forced to compete with one another in a free market. …
