Conclusion
In summary, it is vital that equity considerations influence the determination of health priorities. Reducing inequalities in health in Australia is a daunting task. Acknowledging the shameful inequalities and their relationship to socioeconomic status is the first step. The association between poor health and poverty, inadequate housing, unemployment and socioeconomic status is undeniable. Moreover, these differences are most pronounced in groups such as migrants, the lower classes, men, aboriginals, and the elderly. Taking this premise, we can start to develop and put in place policies to reform the health system and the broader social and economic environment in which we live. The Australian health system must be the catalyst, providing leadership to ensure equity is at the top of the reform agenda.
