Protected forests
-virgin forest: has never been disturbed by human intervention, with natural structure and dynamics

-natural forest: a forest which has evolved as a sequence of natural succession but
still showing anthropogenetic influences; a forest which has developed from unmanaged pasture or from fallow land.

N.B! Romania has one of the largest areas of undisturbed forest in Europe covering almost 27% of the territory.

Forest products & economics
The contribution of the forestry sector, including the wood industry, to GDP has varied between 3.5 and 4.5% over the past decade (Abrudan et al 2009).
The forestry sector is a major employer, especially in rural areas although numbers have dropped from 235,000 in 2000 to an estimated 161,000 in 2009.
The furniture industry is the major employer accounting for almost 80,000 followed by
wood processing and the National Forest Administration – Romsilva.
Net exporter of forest products including furniture, sawn timber and wood panels.
