language learning is habit-formation;
mistakes are bad and should be avoided, as they make bad habits;
the meanings of words can be learned only in a linguistic and cultural context;
languahe skills are learned better if they are presented orally first, than in written form.

Characteristic features of Audio-lingual Method
new material is presented in dialog form and through various drills;
there are little or no grammar explanations;
vocabulary is learned in context;
pronunciation and oral skills are highly important;
immediate error correction;
dependency on memorization, mimicry;
much use of tapes, language labs and visuals;
little or no mother tongue is permitted.
