That tendency means sometimes the U.S. and the EU do not and will not see eye to eye. Recently, European papers have been filled with harsh criticism on controversial policies. Beyond that, high-ranking officials have been speaking out against the U.S.
The Telegraph, a British newspaper, points out that a "sub-text" of EU foreign policies may be a growing hostility toward America. The Telegraph quotes Britain's Tory foreign affairs spokesman, Geoffry van Orden, as saying, "People are very quick to say they support the transatlantic links and the NATO alliance, but the actions taken are all going in a different direction. The truth is that anti-Americanism is the binding theme."
