To my mind, tourism industry is advancing at an alarming rate now. For instance, resorts and hotels are joining the health spa development craze, although only some resorts are moving into the scope of services currently offered by destination spas. Likewise, a growing number of day spas are adding health and wellness programming options.
A distinction is made between the health and the wellness aspects. Health tourism refers to those clients with medical conditions who would travel to experience healing therapies. A person who seeks a wellness travel experience, is generally healthy to start with, and seeks therapies to maintain his or her well being.
All things considered, the authors have included in the Health an Wellness Tourism all good and bad points about this rapidly growing area of the contemporary tourism industry. This text includes a number of features to reinforce theory for advanced students of hospitality, leisure and tourism and related disciplines. These includes: an introduction to the topic, through consideration of the history, origins and scope of this sector and how it fits with today’s international tourism and leisure industry; International case studies to illustrate the nature and scope of the health and wellness tourism product, from hotel spas in Asia, to medical tourism in south Africa to New Age Festivals in New Zealand; Discussion of the motivations and profiles of the wellness tourists and how to target different segments and manage demand.
