Sam Houston Biography

g. Houston was one of the wounded; a projectile ripped through his boot, and shattered his fibula and tibia, but he stayed in his saddle until his mount died from it's fifth wound
Transition: The Texan's, led by Houston had won the battle and their independence from Mexico.
VI. Houston's Post Battle Career
a. 1836 Elected President of Rep. of Texas, served until 1838
b. Elected again in 1841 and served for 3 years
c. 1845 Texas became a state
d. 1846 Houston was elected as 1 of the first senators until 1859
e. 1859 Elected as Governor of Texas
f. Toyed with idea of becoming Prez of U.S., but never seriously
g. Wanted TX to become independent again instead of becoming a confederate state
h. Houston knew the south wouldn't win a Civil War
i. Becoming independent may keep it out of the Civil War
j. 1861 Civil War started, he refused to swear allegiance to the Con.
