Latvia is a small country on the Baltic Sea with ancient history and traditions.
The Latvian National Anthem starts with words : “God bless our Latvian land, Prosper our Fatherland”
Latvia lies on the western edge of the East European plain. It borders on Estonia, Lithuania, the Russian republic and Belarus. It occupies an area of 64.000 km2.
There are many interesting tourist sights which will attract everyone. If you want to enjoy nature - there is not only the serene Gulf of Riga and the open Baltic Sea, but also nature parks, fast rivers and lakes with beautiful forests on the shores. About 700 areas ond objects are under environmental protection of the state. The Gauja National park and 5 other nature preserves encompass most of this territory – Slītere, Grīņi, Moricsala, Krustkalni, Teiči. The highest point in Vidzeme is Gaiziņš – 312 m. The largest rivers are: the Daugava, and the Gauja. Razna Lake is the largest in Latvia.
Forests cover half of the territory of Latvia. Half of them consist of pines, less of birch and fir trees.
