Anna Sakse "Pasakas par ziediem"

Anna Sakse is one of the initiators of Soviet Latvian literature. She was born into the family of poor farmers in 1905 significant turning point in the history of Latvian people .
Her first publication, in 1927, was a poem – “Restlessness My Thrall”, yet it was in different prose genres that her talent really unfolded itself. By 1930 she was working at her first novel based on Latvian peasant life on the eve of the 1905 Revolution. She was then already deeply involved in the clandestine revolutionary Communist movement. Thus, when in 1940 Soviet power was re-established in Latvia, she was among its most enthusiastic supporters. Her novel “Working Man” appeared; periodicals carried a number of her stories such as “Logical Conscience”, and “Turning Point”
World War II compelled Anna Sakse to evacuate to Kirov as a member of the Latvian newspaper “Cīņa”. Now the main theme of her fictional work was the struggle against fascism. Among her most popular stories of that time is “Return of Life”
The young are prominent in Anna Sakse’s postwar novel “Uphil”, her next novel is “Sparks at Night” is autobiographical.
Anna Sakse has been writing fairy-tales of which several collections have appeared – “Makers of Happiness”, “The Story of the King of Spades”, Flowers: Fairy – Tales” (1966), various animal stories.
