Introduction

According to Ieva Zauberga “translation process is often seen as a mechanical transfer of a text from one language into another and translator is a mediator between two cultures”. In addition, any translator has to know how to analyze and translate different kinds of texts. The translator has to comprehend perfectly the content and intention of the author whom he is translating. Every translation is individual. There is no single perfect translation.
Zauberga asserts that the central concept in translation theory is equivalence. Dynamic equivalence and formal equivalence are two approaches to translation. The dynamic (also known as functional equivalence) attempts to convey the thought expressed in a source text (if necessary, at the expense of literalness, original word order, the source text's grammatical voice, etc.), while formal attempts to render the text word-for-word (if necessary, at the expense of natural expression in the target language). The two approaches represent emphasis, respectively, on readability and on literal fidelity to the source text. There is, however, in reality no sharp boundary between dynamic and formal equivalence. The domain of equivalents covers linguistic units such as morphemes, words, phrases, clauses, idioms and proverbs. So, finding equivalents is the most problematic stage of translation.…
