Practitioners use this to heal musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, gastrointestinal, neurological, gynecological, internal disorders, and in post-surgical situations. The cusses or massage therapy quickly started after the World War 2 when medical doctors with advanced degrees in physical medicine started to investigate the benefits or massage. Unlike other massage therapy, Russian massage is based on the physiology of a dysfunction rather than the anatomy. Patients say that this wakes up both body and mind and remove the stress. It has a great impact to all fluid circulation systems. People can be healed from serious health problems like asthma, insomnia, arthritis, bursitis, carpal tunnel problems, headache, spastic colon, colic, constipation, and immune function disorders. Slight Russian massage can be done to seniors and children. Russian massage uses techniques like stretching or kneading motions, gliding relaxing strokes, slow deep penetrating strokes, rubbing, percussing (a tapping motion), vibration (a continuous-motion stroke ranging from very fast to very slow) and deep pressing.
Bowen Theraphy is a holistic approach to pain relief, only 50 years old, created by Tom Bowen from Victoria. He found out that many musculoskeletal, neurological, neuromuscular and other health or pain problems could be found in the soft tissue or fascia. Fascia receives the nerve impulses and connects bones; fascias are also connected with blood vessels. So the massage of this tissue can heal musculoskeletal problems and injuries. The therapy is based on specific receptor reaction to the pressure.
To sum up, I would like to accentuate the massage therapy potential in Latvia. There are many kinds or massages that are not offered in Riga, or are offered for a very high price. The knowledge of different massage techniques can be mixed with those we already know to help the patient with his specific problems. We can learn from masseurs from Eastern cultures to view the body as a holistic system and the use of herbals and plants, nature rhythms from African masseurs. As a massage practitioner I must confess that new information about massages in other countries inspires me to improve my knowledge and improvise with different techniques and ideas.
