Imants Ziedonis is a well-known poet and prose writer of Latvia, the author of numerous books and verse collections. His work bears the hallmark of a lifelong romantic quest for intransient values. His attention is focused on the spiritual world of his contemporary.
The poet was born in 1933, people of his generation were small children when the war started, but they emerged from the war almost adults. This generation had no childhood in the direct sense of the word, but unlived, as it where, unspent childhood, which remained with them for the rest of life. Not infantilism, though, but trustfulness, a child-like spontaneity of perception lives on in the soul of his generation side by side with its present-day maturity. Hence the characteristic creative manner of his generation, varying from poet to poet, yet in some senses identical; indefinably lyrical, sensitive, yet tinged with irony, even sarcasm; philosophical, yet often polemic; traditional, yet occasionally seeking to break down traditions. Imants Ziedonis is striking and typical representative of this generation.
As regards his personality, he displays an amazing sense of modernity, of the climate of his time.
He has been awarded for the Republican and Lenin Komsomol Prizes.
Since 1961- the year of publication of poet’s first book- and until this day, there has been no weakening of contact between Imants Ziedonis and his readership.
