Anna Sakse
(1905 – 1981)
Anna Sakse was born in a poor peasant family in 1905. In 1925 Anna started her pedagogy and philology studies at the University of Latvia, though she never graduated. She worked in several magazines as a translator and proofreader. Anna Sakse started to write when she was very young – her first attempts was when she was only five years old, but the first publication was in 1927 when she was 22 years old.
Her fairy-tale book “Flowers: fairy tales” was first published in 1966. The inspiration for these tales had come from her early years – from her parents’ and grandparents’ stories and from the nature of her homeland. Anna Sakse’s fairy-tales are of a high ethical value and the target audience is very wide – from children to elderly people. In 1978 “Flowers: fairy tales” was translated by Tamara Zalite.
