Early history
The Ice Age ended in Latvia 13-14 thousand years ago, and the first inhabitants entered Latvia when the glaciers had melted in 9,000 BC. The direct ancestors of modern Latvians were of the Proto-Baltic tribes who settled in the present territory of Latvia in about 2,000 BC, and who evolved into the separate Baltic peoples of the Kurshi, the Latgali, the Seli, and the Zemgali. Due to its desirable geopolitical location, Latvia's territory has been conquered and subjugated by the Germans, the Swedes, the Poles and the Russians.
Difficult times
The Republic of Latvia was founded on November 18, 1918, but in 1940 Latvia was occupied by USSR troops. In 1941 15,424 Latvians were deported from Latvia to Siberia. 1941 – 1945 Latvia was occupied by the German Third Reich.…
