As a result of global warming, in areas around Alaska and Siberia the frozen soil (permafrost) has started to melt and thaw.
In Siberia an area of 1 million square km (the size of France and Germany combined) is melting for the first time in 11000 years. This has caused structural damages for above-ground buildings and, as the result of compression effect, deformed soil.
Thawing permafrost, it is believed, could release huge amount of carbon dioxide and methane thus dramatically increase the amount of global warming pollution in the Earth’s atmosphere if it all thawed out. Siberian permafrost alone contains 70 billion metric tones of trapped methane gas, and it has been assumed that 700 million metric tons of CO2 could be released already over the next 100 years. …
