As Mazzini, an Italian statesman, stated earlier in the 19th century, patriotism’s highest aim is to form a nation, often multicultural, its purpose is to unite, and not to divide. However, British jingoism, so appealing to people’s primitive feelings, made imperial propaganda’s system work well. People were, to a certain extent, very proud of being a part of the Empire.
The sense of Britain’s unique imperial mission, constituted from a new type of patriotism. This new patriotism, contributed to the rise of British people’s pride of their empire in the second half of the 19th century. Among the most important factors forming the new type of patriotism were a devotion to monarchy, increased militarism and worship of the imperial heroes, along with press propaganda and entertainment’s field active participation. From one point of view, the gradual development of those tendencies may have diminished people awareness. They were not fully aware of the empire’s aggrandizement’s character. Nevertheless, British people did not consider this character as an evil, because empire’s propaganda system worked well. On the other hand, people were becoming more socially and politically involved in the public life of the country, what could be considered as being empire’s achievement. The ‘mob passion’ for being a patriot was, undoubtedly, the form of British people pride of their country.
