Finally in 1862, he was allowed freely into Germany; and in that same year he divorced his ill childless wife Minna (who later died in 1866). For the next few years he had little success with his operas but was instead, hounded by creditors. King Ludwig of Bavaria rescued him, a fellow Wagnerite who put all his resources in the Munich opera at his disposal. At this time, Wagner met the lovely Cosima von Bulow and fell in love with her. She however, was conveniently married to Hans von Bulow and was the daughter of Liszt. Hans von Bulow was one of Wagner's close friends and favorite conductor, yet that did not stop him, she gave birth to two of Wagner's children while still married to von Bulow.
