President Bush delivered his first State of the Union address on Tuesday, January 29, 2002. With his recent boost in popularity from the way he handled the aftermath of the tragic events that occurred on September 11, 2001, the question of the night seemed to be whether or not Bush could use his transformed stature as a political weapon. The press predicted that Bush would update Congress and the people on the status of the war on terrorism, focus on the domestic front of the war and homeland security, and discuss the economy. They predicted that he would mention North Korea, Iran, and Iraq when on the topic of the ongoing fight against terrorism, which he did. They also pointed out that a few negative topics would be on the public's mind, expressly Enron and the recession.
William Bennett, the former Secretary of Education, predicted that Bush would maintain momentum and support for the war. He believes that we are ready to go to other places to fight terrorism and that the American people feel the same way. …
