Conclusion
The current nuclear weapons posture of the United States has had detrimental effects on the NPT regime as it has debilitated multilateral agreements and created incentives for other states to increase or develop nuclear weapons capabilities. Other states feel threatened by the United States' current and potential capabilities and its apparent willingness to use nuclear weapons for purposes other than deterrence. The fact that the United States wants to develop its nuclear weapons capabilities has gone directly against its commitments in the NPT and especially against its commitments under Article VI and the threats towards other nations created by these actions has put the goal of non-proliferation in even greater peril. In order to counter this, the United States must make a commitment to pursue nuclear weapons reductions multilaterally with other states and denounce the use of nuclear weapons. This kind of attitude emanating from the United States would allow for an atmosphere in which greater steps can be taken on an international level to reduce nuclear weapons and attain their prohibition.
