I feel that the author was very successful in explaining how today's family has evolved from the typical structure that was customary thirty years ago. He focused his research on specific topics that revolve around different family structures. What made his evidence more reliable and successful was that his primary sources, such as the National Survey of Families and Households in the United States, used a lot of statistics from the American Census. This, in turn, gives the reader a realistic outlook of the vast variety of families that exists today. Even though Bumpass is a male, he presented a non- bias research that focused on both genders and supported each statement with facts, rather than opinions.
From this article I have developed a broader insight towards family. I was already aware that families have indeed been changing; however, by reading an article that was based on actual research studies, I was able to acquire a better understanding of the topic at hand. By reading statements that are supported by facts, one is more likely to accept the given information as pertinent evidence. Hopefully, when it comes time for me to have a serious commitment with a partner, I will not expect to follow traditional customs. Perhaps I will end up living with my partner before getting married and even stay at home to take care of my children while my spouse is the main breadwinner. Wouldn't that be nice!
