Adopting Sohrab, Amir’s new-found orphan nephew, is a “way to be good again”. The idea of him finding and taking care of Sohrab was brought by Rahim Khan, who appeared in the story as a caring father-figure. Amir’s constant remorse could only be eased by positive actions. Rahim Khan lying to Amir about Sohrab’s possible foster family was a trick to push him to act in good faith.
Amir’s inability to have a child of his own was a crucial factor in deciding to adopt Sohrab. This resulted in making peace with his past sins, fulfilling his dream of parenting and letting go of guilt. This solution benefits both sides of the story, helping Amir to get over his childhood traumas and giving Sohrab a chance to escape suffering.
