In the Pacific theatre, the Japanese were conflicting with US rights and interests. With Europe in war, Japan invaded China and spheres of influences of other countries as it sought economic domination in Asia. The US refused to recognize Japanese conquests in Asia and imposed an embargo on oil and steel exports to Japan. When America refused to lift the embargo on the oil supplies, Japan in retaliation, on December 7 1941, launched an air attack on Pearl Harbor.
