Since I do not consider myself a member of any organizations, I can describe how the concepts of this course have and have not changed my views on sociological views. In business, a company has many different very important relationships. A word I had never heard before, stakeholders is very important to businesses. If they do not acknowledge all aspects and balance their stakeholders, they will ultimately fail. The company, community relationship is a very important, sometimes overlooked one. If a customer is dissatisfied with a company and the problem is not resolved quickly, word can spread quickly about these negative experiences and ruin the business. It seems that anytime a person has an unpleasant experience with a business, they will quickly tell everyone they know. Conversely, when someone is pleased with an experience, they usually will not make a big deal out of it, only bringing it up in a conversation that relates to the issue.
Employees are a very important stakeholder in businesses, without them, all functions cease. Therefore businesses must keep their employees content, with good working environments, competitive pay and benefits. Being an employee of a big corporation, I now realize that I am an important stakeholder in my company and that I can make a difference.
Labor unions could also be considered a stakeholder, because they have so much power over the employees that are members of the union. Today only 14 percent of the workforce are members of unions compared to the 1930s and 40s when unions were at their prime. Today many employers are taking a stand against union strikes by hiring outside contractors and even calling back retirees.
