The Little Man in the Loincloth
Mohandas Karamchand "Mahatma" Gandhi was perhaps the most influential person of the 20th Century, yet, he held no office or title, and possessed no wealth. Mahatma Gandhi's Influence and accomplishments were largle responsible for India's Indepence from Britian. He won no elections, and claimed no scientific discoveries or inventions. His legacy, a philosophy of nonviolence and non-cooperation, continues to this day with an profound effect on the world. It was the inspiration for Martin Luther King's fight for racial equality. This is the Gandhi about whom Albert Einstein wrote, "Generations to come, it may be, will scarce believe that such a one as this ever in flesh and blood walked upon this earth." Who would have thought a little man in a loincloth, would change the world forever. It is hard not to be saddened by the virtual disappearance of Gandhi's ideals from the world we inhabit today. The only language now available to politics seems to be the language of war. Fundamentalisms of all kinds -- religious as well as cultural -- are gathering momentum across the globe. If it wasn't for Gandhi, the world would never have realized the true power of nonviolence. Mahatma Gandhi changed the world because he showed all that there is a way to fight without raising a hand.
