Latvia is situated in the north – east part of Europe on the shore of the Baltic Sea. Latvia borders with the two other Baltic States – Estonia and Lithuania. Also Latvia borders with Russia and Belarus. The length of its border on land is 1862 kilometers and its sea border is 494 kilometers long.
The territory covers 64 689 square kilometers, 45% of which is forests.
Latvia’s capital city is Rīga, where about one third of the country’s inhabitants reside. (izvietoti) The total number of inhabitants is 2,306million.
Latvia has four administrative regions – Kurzeme, Zemgale, Vidzeme, and Latgale. The three biggest ports are in Ventspils, Liepāja and Rīga.
State language in Latvia is Latvian language, which belongs to the Baltic languages and stems (izcelties no) from the Indo – European language group.
National currency in Latvia is Lat. In 2008 Latvia plans to introduce Euro – the single currency of the European Union, because Latvia is a member of European Union since 2004. Also Latvia is a member of NATO.
Official religions in Latvia are Lutheran, Catholic and Orthodox.
