Cultural differences
A poor diet can cause havoc with a baby's growth, as can polluted water and smoking in front of baby.
Growth hormone efficiency
A total growth hormone deficiency is often discovered in a child's infancy. At birth, the infant's height and weight are normal. However, between three to nine months the child's growth rate will be reduced (growth disturbance). Later, the ability to gain weight begins to diminish; teeth development is delayed and the child may also acquire a thick layer of fat under the skin. This symptom will not always be visible if the growth hormone deficiency is only partial. (8)
It would seem the argument is balances between nature and nurture when it comes to the argument on why a baby's growth is affected pre and post natally. On researching this subjecting, and reading surveys done over years, this would appear to be true. Genetics and environment play an equal part in factors affecting growth in a foetus/baby.
