IX. Conclusion
In my paper, I have examined the narrative and socio-historical reasons behind the stereotypical representations of women, as well as the reinforcing effects of such stereotypes on patriarchal power relations. I have explored the most significant changes in the representations of women in mainstream films, and concluded that female tropes still require revision.
I have examined three of the filmic tropes Hollywood imposes on women, namely the Femme Fatale, The Witch (or Weird Girl), and the Cool Girl, demonstrating the aforementioned socio-historical and cultural changes in their shifting representations throughout mainstream film history.
Finally, I have presented the idea of counter-cinema as a potentian solution for the problems posed by mainstream films, and argued that change is not possible without women participating in the mainstream production of films, giving voice to authentic female experiences and reaching a much wider audience than oppositional cinema.
