Upward communication is critical because as mentioned earlier obtaining feedback from their workforce is essential, also ideas and complaints that are valued by management. They monitor to see what extent business objectives are being achieved.
Open and restricted are the final 'channels' of communication. Restricted communications are used for private and confidential information aimed at only one person or a small number of individuals. Examples might include meetings or presentations from a manager to a director. Other restricted information may be by the use of a computer system which only channels information to certain users on a network. E-mails are sent to recipients as information aimed directly to them confidential and classified for others to see.
The reasons why information flow may be restricted could be because of issues of confidentiality or because it is simply inefficient and unnecessary to broadcast information to people who do not need it. This would waste time and effort. It is far more effective if the sender of information can filter it as far as possible so that it only goes where it is really needed.
