Using an Illustration
A real-life incident, a passage from a novel or short story, or a hypothetical illustration can also get a speech off to a good start. The illustration is humorous instead of serious, the effect is different but the introduction can be equally useful.
Completing Your Introduction:
No matter what type of introduction you use, you should have three purposes in mind : arousing the attention your listeners, winning their good will and respect, and setting a tone and direction for the substance of your talk.
Further more, the introduction should forecast the speech's development by means of a preview. Here are examples of types of previews :
1.Announce the organizational pattern: Tell your listeners what you are going to do in order. For example, you might say " I'll develop the effects of the problem of spousal abuse and then examine its cause" (causal pattern). Or (In demonstrating how to check basic problems with your computer, I'll consider three topics. I'll talking about the hard drive, the ancillary drive systems, and the word processing program" (topic order).
