Background... First International Bank employs over 5000people, most of whom are based in a centralised headquarters and are involved in one of five major activities of the bank. And this activities are: operations, administration, personnel, computing or information technology (IT). All this activities are to subdivided. This strong tendency to organise by function cascades down through the many layers of the organisation as well as across the directorates, though some directorates clearly lend themselves more easily to the model (e.g. operations and computing), than do others (e.g. personnel and administration). Hierachically, the bank has modelled itself very much on civil service lines. …
