Also typical for colloquial speech are aposiopesis and inversion which are used by Miss Shuttleworth; an example for aposiopesis: ‘Oh! You startled me. Why -’. This shows that Miss Shuttleworth was very surprised when Mr Adamson disturbed her. The examples for inversion: ‘Why, I wonder?’, ‘The sneezing, I mean’. Inversion mainly is used to stress the important words or thought, here the sneezing and the question ‘why’ are the most important things so it does not matter how the sentences are constructed, but only the idea matters.
This text is full of colourful epithets and metaphors.
